1. The wife of his second slave master taught him to read and write.
2. Escaped slavery by forging documents and moved to New Bedford, MA.
3. His book was so popular that after publishing it he went to Ireland and England, fearing his slave master would claim him and force him to return to Maryland.
4. His freedom was purchased for him by British supporters.
5. He had 5 children with his first wife Anne; the youngest died at 10 years old.
6. After his first wife died he married a white woman who was 20 years younger than him.
7. He was famous for his anti-slavery newspapers, literature and speeches.
8. He at first viewed the U.S. Constitution as a pro-slavery document, but was later convinced that it was fundamentally anti-slavery and began arguing that slavery should be abolished on grounds that it was unconstitutional.
10. He was born in Maryland in 1818 and died in 1895 from a stroke or a heart attack.
11. He adopted Feb. 14 as his birthday because his mom called him her Valentine.
12. In 1872 he was the first African American vice-presidential candidate.
13. Was an ordained minister of an African Methodist Episcopal church.
14. His second slave master's wife taught him the alphabet, from which he taught himself to read and write.
