1. Mr. Hopkins was fired because he lacked severity. He was replaced by Mr. Gore.
2. Mr. Gore was proud, ambitious, persevering, artful, cruel, obdurate, grave, never inconsistent, inflexible, firm, stone-like, savage, barbarous.
3. Mr. Gore killed Demby, but shooting him in the face. His reason was that Demby was being unmanageable and he had to make an example out of him or else the slaves would become subversive.
4. There was no penalty for a white killing a slave. Douglass gives the following evidence:
a. Mr. Gore killing Demby and only had to explain himself to Colonel Lloyd
b. Ms. Hicks killing a young female slave and was never arrested.
c. Mr. Thomas Lanman killing two slaves, one by "knocking his brains out" with a hatchet, and bragged about it.
d. Mr Bondly shot and killed one of Colonel Lloyd's slaves who was trespassing on his property. He was not punished; he only had to repay Colonel Lloyd.
