Chapter 2

1. The slaves who manned the sloop were envied by the other slaves because they were able to visit Baltimore.

2. A slave who became "unmanageable" was severely whipped and sent to Baltimore to be sold, as a warning to the other slaves.

3. The slaves were given a yearly allowance of clothing, which consisted of the following: two linen shirts, one pair of linen trousers, one jacket, one pair of winter trousers,(all made of "coarse negro cloth"), one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes; and a monthly allowance of food, which consisted of the following: eight pounds of pork, or fish and one bushel of corn meal.

4. The slaves slept on the cold, damp floor.

5. Mr. Severe was an extremely brutal and cruel overseer. He died and Mr. Hopkins replaced him. Mr. Hopkins was much less cruel; he was called by the slaves a good overseer.

6. The extended metaphor is in the first paragraph on page 12. It compares being selected to run errands at the Great House Farm to being elected to the American Congress.

7. The slaves sang on their way to the Great House Farm.

9. “It is impossible to conceive of a greater mistake” refers to people believing the slaves songs were evidence of their happiness.
